Feeling Positive About the Avs Again
After a strong start, mainly due to the teams form on the road, Colorado stumbled through November; leaving fans and pundits wondering whether the teams curent direction was in fact the right course.
Whilst the franchise is not back to the soaring heights of the 90’s and early 2000’s, a recent resurgence gives cause for hope in Denver.
Ryan O’Reilly has had a break out season, leading the team in points and tied with Paul Stastny for the team lead in goals – all whilst playing himself in to contention for the Selke Trophy as well as making a great case to become the clubs next Captain.
Peter Mueller’s brace against Florida also had a feel good factor to it as the forward looks to put concussion issues behind him after missing 102 games over the past two years.
We’ve also seen Stefan Elliott break in to the ‘big club’ whilst 2011 draft pick Gabriel Landeskog has made a very solid start to his NHL career. The two youngster represent a solid group of prospects in the Avalanche system, which also includes Joey Hishon and Cameron Gaunce.
In net Semyon Varlamov and JS Giguere seek the settle a position which has been something of an achilles heel for the club since Patrick Roy retired. Whilst Varlamov has lurched from the spectacular to the shocking he has shown glimpses of potential which can given fans hope going forward.
Meanwhile veteran Giguere has rekindled some of his form of times past going 11-6-1 with a string of impressive performances under his belt. With Cedric Desjardin, Calvin Pickard and Sami Aittokallio in the system as well there are enough positives in the team goaltending setup to wash over the fact GM Greg Sherman gave up a 1st and 2nd round pick to get Varlamov last summer.
Whilst there will still be those who balk at the price paid to get the young Russian, the club now finds itself in 8th place and challenging for a play-off spot. There are certainly a few areas that could be improved upon and some members of the roster I’d like to see more from, it’s refreshing to see the club competing in such a tight Conference again.
I still think my early season prediction of 10th will hold up, but this season was always about development for me – and things seem to be developing nicely.
