The Overtime Winner #2: ‘The Guarantee’

Has there ever been a more ridiculous moment in hockey than Mark Messier’s guarantee of victory against New Jersey in the 1994 play-offs?

Messier, then Captain of the New York Rangers, boldly predicted victory over the rival Devils in Game 6 of the Conference Finals. It spawned one of the most famous headlines in sporting history and what transpired became one of hockeys most iconic events – Messier didn’t just talk the talk; he walked the walk too!

Trailing 2-1 going in to the 3rd period, the Rangers faced elimination before ‘Captain Courageous’ netted a hat trick to tie the series.

The sheer magnitude of Messier’s claims are still mind boggling given the occasion and the rivalry that exists between the two teams. To then register 3+1 in a 4-2 victory to stave off elimination only enhances the legend.

The fact he then led the Rangers to their first Stanley Cup in more than 60 years is the icing on the cake for my second favourite moment in hockey history.

The Overtime Winner is a collection of my favourite hockey moments – it’ a little self indulgent, a little sugary and rose tinted at times but simply put I wanted to get all nostalgic over some happy times as a hockey fan.
